04 Sep Dress the Part, Feel the Part Choosing the Perfect Workout Clothes
Did you know that the right attire can make a significant difference in your performance and overall experience? While it may be tempting to throw on any old t-shirt and shorts, investing in proper workout clothes is well worth it. And you do not need to spend a ton of money or wear design gear.
Comfort and Freedom of Movement
As an instructor, I know how important it is to be comfortable in your workout clothes. Those who have taken my class have heard my plea for pants that stay up during an entire session (Body suits have fixed that for me). One of the primary reasons to wear the proper attire is the comfort they provide. You want pieces that breathe and have moisture-wicking properties to keep you cool and dry during your workouts. The materials used to make workout clothes do that, plus provide flexibility so that you can get the full range of motion. This is critical as it enables you to perform exercises with ease and efficiency. It also aids in the instructor’s cues when we see body placement. Wonder why ballet teachers only allow their students to wear tights and leotards. They need to see every muscle and placement in the body to correct and teach the students proper technique.
Temperature Regulation
Whether you’re working out indoors or outdoors, regulating your body temperature is important for optimal performance. Workout clothes are designed to help manage body heat and moisture. Think about back in the day when you wore pantyhose in the summer. Extremely uncomfortable and limiting. Workout clothes are often made with moisture-wicking properties that pull sweat away from your skin, allowing it to evaporate more quickly. This feature helps to keep you cool in hot and humid conditions. For those winter outdoor runners, some workout clothes also provide insulation and warmth in colder temperatures, keeping your body at a comfortable and regulated temperature.
Injury Prevention
Ill-fitting clothing or materials that restrict movement can hinder your performance and increase the risk of accidents. I remember wearing some loose-fitting pants in a dance class and my foot getting twisted up in the pants. Luckily I did not injure myself, but I did fall in class. Workout clothes that offer a snug yet comfortable fit can help support your muscles and joints during physical activity. Swelling of knees and joints can be an issue and certain types of workout gear, such as compression garments, can improve blood circulation, reduce muscle vibration, and minimize the risk of strains or muscle soreness.
Confidence Boost
When you wear workout clothes specifically designed for a particular exercise, you send a message to yourself and others that you are committed to your fitness goals. Activewear often comes in a wide range of styles, colors, and patterns, allowing you to express your personal style and feel good about your appearance while working out. Feeling confident in your attire can boost your motivation, self-esteem, and overall enjoyment of your fitness routine. Expressing your style and vibe also makes you feel good. Think about when you wore your favorite ensemble, or the perfect outfit for a special event. Workout clothes can carry that same feeling. The clothes we wear can have a significant impact on our mindset and confidence levels.
Practicality and Durability
Unlike everyday clothing, workout clothes are typically made with durable fabrics that can endure frequent washing, stretching, and sweating without losing their shape or functionality. Investing in high-quality workout clothes means you can rely on them to withstand the rigors of your fitness regimen for a more extended period. High-quality does not always equal high price. There are many affordable options on the market today. As many call them “dupes” can be found online or even in some of your favorite retail stores (don’t sleep on Costco leggings). They do not lack in color, size, availability, or comfort. Subscription services are also good, as you get new pieces every month and whatever doesn’t work for you send back.
While some may say workout clothes seems like a minor aspect of your fitness journey, their impact on your performance, comfort, and overall experience should not be underestimated. From providing comfort and freedom of movement to supporting injury prevention and boosting confidence, the right workout attire can enhance your workouts and motivate you to achieve your fitness goals. So, gear up with the right workout clothes, and elevate your exercise routine to new heights.
